More Initiatives

Building on MIT ReACT’s commitment to research-driven program development, MIT Emerging Talent continued to assess and refine its educational model through rigorous study and continuous improvement. This research foundation ensured our programs remained responsive to learner needs and effective in achieving meaningful outcomes for displaced and underserved communities.

We collaborated with the Whitaker Peace Development Initiative (WPDI) to design a digital learning platform for the WPDI Community Learning Center in Kiryandongo, Uganda. Through interactive capacity-building and co-designed workshops, the team brought together WPDI leaders, instructors, and learners with technologists and instructional designers to develop digital learning modules in ICT, Business and Entrepreneurship, and Peace Building and Conflict Resolution. These modules were piloted at WPDI's IT Lab in Kiryandongo, with support from the Western Union Foundation.

MIT ReACT, Na'amal, TalentLift, World Education Services, and the Tent Partnership for Refugees developed a Guide on Redesigning the Tech Hiring Process to Include Displaced Talent. The guide drew insights from workshops held in 2021 which brought together tech hiring teams across Canada, refugee candidates, and supporting nonprofit and training organizations.

With the support of the The MIT Integrated Learning Initiative we developed a comparative study between learners who chose internships versus self-guided experiential projects within the Computer and Data Science (CDS) Certificate Program. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to assess the learning effectiveness of structured mentoring opportunities and their impact on the learner experience and future work placement.

MIT Emerging Talent is a proud member of the Connected Learning in Crisis Consortium (CLCC), a collaborative network of universities, NGOs, and humanitarian organizations working to promote quality higher education and professional development for communities in contexts of crisis and displacement through connected learning. The diverse CLCC community has been instrumental to our success, helping recruit talented learners and connecting them with scholarships, internships, and event opportunities that advance their careers.

Dr. Admir Masic, faculty founder, and Dr. Lana Cook, former program director, served on the President's Alliance for Higher Education and Immigration's Working Group on University Sponsorship of Refugee Students in 2022. Alongside diverse partner organizations, we helped shape the "RESPONSE Campaign," which engaged colleges and universities to provide education pathways for refugee students to study, resettle, and obtain legal permanent residence in the U.S.
